• Gilroy – Residents are asked to leave non-perishable foods by their mailboxes today, as part of the Stamp Out Hunger effort. Local postal carriers will pick up the goods to distribute to local families in need, as part of a joint effort between the National Association of Letter Carriers and the U.S. Postal Service. The carriers ask that residents do not include out of date items or those in glass containers.
Blood drive success
• Gilroy –The American Red Cross blood drive in Gilroy Thursday brought out 58 potential donors and collected 46 pints of blood, 10 more pints than the goal.
Each pint of blood is used to save up to three lives so the Gilroy blood drive’s 46 pints will help 138 people in Northern California to survive physical traumas and fight potentially fatal diseases.
The next mobile blood drive in Gilroy will be June 9 at the First Baptist Church, 8455 Wren Avenue from 1:30pm to 6:30pm.

Bear Ranch gala opening
• Gilroy – The Coyote Lake-Harvey Bear County Park opening ceremony will be Saturday at 11am. The park will be open to the public with a full slate of amenities to enjoy, including a nature run, canine hike, equestrian and bike rides as well as access to its camping, fishing, picnic, boating and hiking trail venues. The ceremony will include remarks from civic, regional and local leadership. Exit on Leavesley Road, follow it and turn left onto New Avenue. Turn right onto Roop Road, which turns into Gilroy Hot Springs Road, and follow it to the park entrance.

Piano players stand out
• Gilroy –Sixteen local piano students from the Gilroy music studio of Diana Fennell have registered as candidates for membership in the National Fraternity of Student Musicians, sponsored by the National Guild of Piano Teachers, Teacher Division of the American College of Musicians, of which Fennell is a member.
This group of young pianists will perform in the National piano-playing auditions, beginning May 18, at Brightrock Music Studios in San Jose and will strive for various state or national honors.
The group includes Jonathan Sakoi of Morgan Hill, Matthew Sakoi of Morgan Hill, Bryan Cox of Gilroy, Morgen Buciak of Morgan Hill, Knox Buciak of Morgan Hill, Emilie Allaert of Morgan Hill, Marga Garcia of Gilroy, Natalie Garcia of Gilroy, Brandie Rodriguez of Gilroy, Natalie Khoury of Morgan Hill, Rawan Khoury of Morgan Hill, Katrina Pasao of Gilroy, Daryll Campos of Gilroy, Jasmin Booker of Gilroy, Gavin Mummert of Gilroy and Sandra Kreitem of Morgan Hill.
The American College of Musicians will evaluate the students’ performances based upon their presentation of baroque, classic, romantic and modern works. Each student will perform in the presence of a professional adjudicator chosen by the National organization who will examine his or her repertoire.
Bluegrass at Casa de Fruta
• Gilroy – Join your Bluegrass friends and neighbors through Sunday at Casa de Fruta on Highway 152 for lots of jamming, tent camping, kids activities and workshops. Three-day tickets (which includes Friday/Saturday night camping) can be purchased online for $70. Individual day tickets range between $25 to $30 for great bands like REO Haywagon, Bean Creek and Harmony Grits. Children also have the opportunity to be a part of Kids on Stage with Frank Solivan.
