Supe’s adopt oak preservation plan
San Jose – County residents are eligible for state funding now that the Santa Clara County Supervisors has adopted an oak woodlands preservation plan.
Supervisor Don Gage called it a positive move.
A range of projects is eligible for funding, from something as simple as installing wire baskets to protect young oaks to buying and planting rows of trees. Groups like the Land Trust and The Nature Conservancy are interested in getting money to buy conservation easements to protect farm land and open space from development.
Grant money should be available this summer.

Plan to end homelessness available
San Jose – The county’s 10-year plan to end chronic homeless is now available for public viewing. The plan grew out of a national initiative to end homelessness by 2015. Santa Clara County’s plan emphasizes a “housing-first” model that gives permanent housing at little or no cost and then provides services for addiction, mental illness, domestic violence and other social ills.
Homeless advocates have said that a permanent funding mechanism will be necessary to make the plan work, and some have suggested putting a property tax on a future ballot.

Senate rejects GPS for molesters
Sacramento – California lawmakers Tuesday rejected a bill to track the location of child molesters for the rest of their lives using a global positioning satellite system, a day after Florida lawmakers signed a similar bill.
The Senate Public Safety Committee rejected Senate Bill 722 by Sen. Jeff Denham, R-Merced, saying it had been amended too recently. The legislation was re-introduced less than a week ago.
The bill would have required anyone convicted of a lewd or lascivious act with a child under the age of 12 to wear a lifetime monitoring device. It was patterned after a Florida law, named after 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford, who was found dead last month.
