The Green Phone was created so the fans could voice their opinions. Give us a call and let us know what’s on your mind.
Editor’s Note: The first three calls are in response to Caller 1 from last week’s Green Phone (April 1). Here’s an excerpt from that call: “I’m calling your line here to say how disappointed I am to see that you have what they call semi-pro football, the Barnstormers, on the front page of the sports section. That’s like an adult Pop Warner. Those guys need to grow up. I’d much rather see you use the space on promoting the other high school in town with their sports. Anchorpoint Christian should be listed somewhere (in the section).”
CALLER 1: Well, I’m sorry (Caller 1’s) school didn’t get the attention it deserves. I just think it is pretty bad that they had to bash the Barnstormers to get the point across! I think before they say things they said they should go to a game. With close to 500 people in the stands, someone wants to see the Barnstormers. They should also know that on March 25, the Northern California Amateur Football Federation – the league that the Barnstormers play in – brought in over 1,300 cans of food that was donated to the Harvest food bank. All the cans of food were not brought in by players and coaches, but from all the fans that attended that day. The Barnstormers have donated some money in the past to the Gilroy Browns and plan on this year doing more food drives as well as donating more to other school programs. The Barnstormer players live in Gilroy, Morgan Hill, Hollister, Salinas and South San Jose. So why don’t they deserve some attention? It’s news, it’s local. I want to see more on the Barnstormers.
GREEN PHONE: You have friends on the Barnstormer bandwagon, Caller 1….
CALLER 2: Not sure why Caller 1 is bashing the Barnstormers? I think that Caller 1 is just bitter about Anchorpoint not being recognized. But that is a different issue. It has nothing to do with the Barnstormers. The Barnstormers is a great semi-pro team that gives a lot back to our community and as community members we should all be grateful. Caller 1 needs to relax and do a little research before he/she bashes something that he/she knows nothing about. Thank you for your time.
GREEN PHONE: One more caller….
CALLER 3: I’m writing this in response to Caller 1. First off, I’m sorry that your school or sports teams from Anchorpoint Christian aren’t getting their write-ups in the paper. I just don’t see how bashing the Barnstormers and what they are doing helps your school. I am a high school coach and as a coach it’s your job to call the paper and give them scores and events. If you, Caller 1, want your school’s sports on the front page then YOU call it in. I also think before you make the comments you should learn a few things about the Barnstormers.
GREEN PHONE: Well, the Barnstormer contingent has spoken. We must say, last week’s Caller 1 did send a pretty low blow to the Barnstormers, an organization that has no bearing whatsoever on Anchorpoint Christian’s coverage in the paper. Regardless, can’t we all just get along? In the future, our readers can expect coverage of both the Barnstormers and Anchorpoint Christian.
CALLER 4: I bought five tickets for Fight Night at the Tank for Kelsey Jeffries’ fight. We’re from Hollister. We were just totally disappointed. We didn’t know anything about Jeffries’ fight being canceled until we got there. Although we did see her, she was signing autographs. I don’t even know why she was there. But we went there to support her, we were just totally, totally surprised that it was canceled. We would have never gone if we knew she wasn’t fighting. It was really screwed up of the people who handled this. Anyway, had my say. Bye.
GREEN PHONE: Caller 4, we’re sure you weren’t the only fan disappointed by the fact that the Jeffries fight didn’t go on as planned – and that the decision for it was made just three days before the fight. We’re not sure what the policies are behind continuing to promote a fighter that is no longer fighting in a match at Fight Night at the Tank, but they clearly aren’t fan-friendly. I guess it goes without saying that in the future, Jeffries’ fans like yourself will have to be more careful about buying tickets for Fight Night. As a side note, we’re sorry you weren’t reading the Dispatch or Hollister Free Lance sports sections a little bit closer. You would have seen the Tuesday, March 21 story about the fight deal going down the tubes. It at least would have saved you a trip from Hollister to San Jose and back.
