Dear Editor,

In 2000, I voted for the Measure A “BART tax”, because I see the need for a transit link between San Jose and the east bay, and the experts at the VTA and the Silicon Valley Leadership Group told us BART was the way to do it.

Like a lot of voters, I’ve been getting more and more skeptical of the “experts”, who now admit they can’t build BART without another tax, and whose arguments for BART rely on dubious figures, like ridership projects that have been conveniently re-estimated upwards to make the project seem more worthwhile.

But when environmentalists, riders groups and the general public have the gumption to question whether there might be a more cost-effective solution than BART, the reaction from the VTA and SVLG is “you’re not qualified – shut up and listen to the experts”.

But it’s clear that the self-appointed experts have failed to deliver. Maybe it’s time for them to be quiet for a change and actually give alternatives plans like CalTrain Metro East, even if they’re “drawn on the back of napkins”, more serious attention.

Also, I just wanted to point out that Andrew Papson, though I am sure he is honestly representing his views, omits an important fact in his letter, namely that he is an associate of the pro-BART Silicon Valley Leadership Group.

To verify this, just try googling up “papson svlg.”

Smells suspiciously like astro-turning to me!
