Doris Elsie Burnett died Nov. 17, 2002, of natural causes in La Quinta. She was 86.

She was born Nov. 4, 1916 in Webster City, Iowa and was the seventh of nine children.

After graduating from high school in Webster City, she worked in Iowa and Minnesota before going to beauty school in Des Moines, Iowa. She worked as a beautician in Chicago, Ill. where she met her husband, Don Burnett. They moved to San Jose in 1944, then on to Gilroy in 1946. In 1954 they moved to Salinas.

Doris moved back to Gilroy in 1993 to be near her family. In her later years she worked for the Alliance on Aging and the Cancer Society in Salinas and was a hospital volunteer in Gilroy. She spent the last two years of her life in La Quinta where she lived with her son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Sandy Burnett.

She was an independent and strong woman with a sense of adventure and a great sense of humor. She especially enjoyed being with her family. Her hobbies included reading, sewing and crocheting.

Her husband preceded her in death.

She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Burnett Wiese and husband, Craig Wiese of Anchorage, Alaska; son Dennis Burnett and daughter-in-law, Sandy Burnett of La Quinta; son, Donn Burnett of Modesto; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two surviving sisters; nieces and their families.

Cremation and burial at sea will be conducted by the Neptune Society. A gathering of family and friends is planned for Saturday, Nov. 23 from 2 to 5 p.m. in Gilroy to commemorate her long life as a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Call 842-8365 for details.
