Gilroy High’s boys tennis team split matches this week with a pair of Salinas schools.
After a 4-3 loss on Tuesday to Salinas High, the Mustangs responded by downing Alvarez 6-1 on Thursday.
Despite the defeat earlier in the week, Gilroy coach John Langer said there was an obvious improvement being made from each match to the next.
“I really think we are starting to find the right doubles combinations,” Langer said. “In four meetings with Salinas, this is the first time we picked up multiple matches. Our doubles teams looked strong and our singles guys played well.”
Langer added that the play of No. 1 doubles pair Derek Okada and Mitch Souza, and the No. 3 pairing of brothers Derek and Dylan Jensen, have consistently been valuable contributors.
“Okada (and) Souza are really starting to hit their stride,” Langer said. “I think if they continue to play smart, they will do well in the league finals at the end of the month.
“The Jensen brothers haven’t lost all season. They are giving us quality victories at (No.) 3 doubles.”
The singles victory that stood out most to the Mustangs’ coach came from Sai Erdenechimeg, who came back to top Alvarez’ Richie Contreras in a tiebreaker 2-6, 8-7 (10-8), 13-11.
“Sai was down most of the match and had to play catch up in order to come out with a crazy victory,” Langer said.
