The Gilroy Downtown Business Association announced the launch of its new website, downtowngilroy.com, during a board of directors meeting Tuesday night.

The website includes a downtown events calendar, a photo gallery and a property database showing available buildings.

The home page also includes a “Featured Business” section.

“It’s very, very professional looking,” said Eric Howard, president of the Downtown Business Association. “I think all the businesses will be happy with it.”

Additional meeting notes:

– Jane Howard, executive director of the Gilroy Visitor’s Bureau, announced the city had lost a bid to host California’s newest welcome center to Salinas. Howard said Gilroy, however, did finish ahead of Monterey in the voting.

– Board member John Tomasello said the Association would be looking into purchasing a speaker system that would play music throughout Downtown Gilroy. Tomasello said he received a quote of $26,402 to install the 56-speaker system, and he would get other quotes while the association raised any additional funds needed to secure the system. “I wanted that a long time ago,” Howard said. “It’s finally coming. It elevates Gilroy. It brings us up another level. It’s very beneficial for a lot of different events.” Howard said he hoped the system would be installed by the Downtown Wine Stroll event May 14.

– Gilroy Chamber of Commerce President Susan Valenta gave an update on downtown’s pigeon relocation project. Nine pigeons have been relocated away from downtown so far, Valenta said, and the project will continue for two more months. “Over the next two months, you’ll see some results,” Valenta said. “It’s not going to get rid of all of them, but it’s going to help.”

– The board decided that, for now, Downtown Gilroy encompasses north-south from Third Street to Eighth Street and east-west from Eigleberry Street to Railroad Street.

– The board discussed possibly charging businesses $25 or $50 per year to belong to the Downtown Business Association.
