Downtown Water Main Busted

A backhoe punctured a downtown water main Wednesday morning at the corner of Fifth and Monterey streets. Afterward, the construction vehicle helped remove thousands of gallons of water that spewed as high as the rooftops across a quarter block and shattered the plate glass window of one business. City officials said the accident would not delay the two-block overhaul of Monterey Street, scheduled for completion by early November.
