The driver involved in a May 9 felony hit-and-run case has been identified by police but has not been taken into custody, according to Gilroy Police Department Sgt. Pedro Espinoza.
Though the driver’s name is being withheld at this time, police said he is a 34-year-old Gilroy man. The man walked into the GPD lobby on Monday and provided a statement relating to his involvement in the investigation, Espinoza said.
The 24-year-old female victim, who suffered serious injuries after she was struck by a champagne-colored SUV at approximately 9:56 p.m., continues to recover from her injuries. According to police, the driver fled the scene of the accident.
“The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending district attorney review and recommendation,” Espinoza added.

Gilroy Police Department is on the lookout for a champagne-colored full-size SUV following a hit-and-run on the 200 block of 10th Street near the intersection with Rosanna Street.
On May 9 at approximately 9:56 p.m., Gilroy Police Department responded to a vehicle vs. pedestrian collision. Upon arrival officers located an unidentified 24-year-old female victim suffering from serious injuries. Officers also were informed that the vehicle involved in this collision had fled the scene west on 10th Street toward Monterey Road. Emergency medical personnel arrived to render aid the victim. She was transported to an area trauma center where she is currently listed in stable, but serious condition.
Officer canvassed the area in attempt to locate the responsible suspect and vehicle with negative results. Witnesses on scene were interviewed and this investigation continues to be on going.
The Gilroy Police Department is asking the community for assistance in locating this vehicle. It is described as a full size Champagne color SUV, missing the driver’s side mirror, and was last seen traveling westbound on 10th Street away from the scene.
