Gilroy – Drunken drivers wreaked havoc on Gilroy streets this weekend, denting cars and risking lives.

Officers arrested at least six soused drivers on Saturday and Sunday, including one who caused a dangerous accident at the intersection of Chestnut Street and Stutz Way Saturday night. The crash injured both drivers, one of whom was flown to Valley Medical Center, the other rushed by ambulance to Saint Louise Regional Hospital.

Police did not return calls Monday requesting the identify the drivers, or provide further details about their conditions.

Super Bowl Sunday is traditionally a high-risk weekend for drunken driving, according to the California Highway Patrol, which reported 481 DUI arrests, 242 alcohol-involved collisions, and seven DUI deaths on Super Bowl Sunday 2006. But in Gilroy, drunken drivers didn’t wait for game day. Three DUI arrests were made Saturday night, and one in the wee hours of Sunday morning.

The DUI blitz is significant: Prior to this weekend, the Dispatch reported roughly 55 DUI arrests in the past three months.
