MORGAN HILL – Two Santa Clara County Fire Department engines sustained minor damage in an early morning accident that sent the driver of a pickup to the hospital with minor injuries, charged with driving under the influence.
SCCFD Engine 13 and Patrol 13 from the station at Hill Road and Dunne Avenue responded to a small roadside vegetation fire in Nordstrom Park on East Dunne Avenue adjacent to an elementary school.
The vehicles were parked, with emergency lights flashing, while firefighters worked the fire. At 2:30 a.m., a full-sized Chevy pickup driven by Ismael Beserril, 27, of Morgan Hill, plowed into the smaller SCCFD vehicle, pushing it into the larger engine.
Morgan Hill Police Department officers responded, and an ambulance was called. Beserril was charged with driving under the influence and driving without a license, MHPD Lt. Joe Sampson said Monday morning. Beserril was taken by ambulance to a hospital with minor bumps and bruises.
No firefighters were injured, said SCCFD Battalion Chief Don Jarvis on Monday, and the damage to the engines was minor. Jarvis described the damage to the pickup as “major.”
The fire was extinguished a short time after the accident.
