As Memorial Day approaches, our community—like many across the nation—prepares for parades, backyard cookouts, and the unofficial start of summer. But at the heart of this holiday lies something far deeper and more solemn: the remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Memorial Day is, at its core, a time for collective remembrance, reflection and gratitude.

In towns big and small, brave men and women left behind families, futures, and familiar places to serve a cause greater than themselves. Memorial Day gives us a chance to honor those lives lost—not only through ceremonies and flag-raising traditions but by pausing to reflect on the cost of the freedoms we enjoy every day.

Commemorating Memorial Day also fosters a deeper sense of national unity. In an increasingly polarized society, remembering our fallen heroes offers a shared moment of respect and reverence that transcends politics. It’s an opportunity to reflect on values like service, honor and community—principles that can guide us in daily life.

Celebrating Memorial Day locally also strengthens the bonds that tie us together. Coming together for a wreath-laying ceremony, a veterans’ tribute, or even a moment of silence reminds us that we are part of a community that values sacrifice, service and unity. It’s a time when differences fade, and gratitude takes center stage.

In Gilroy, the American Legion Gilroy Post #217 invites the public to a Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony beginning at 10am May 26 at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park, 1000 First St.

As we mark this solemn day, let us not only remember the dead but also renew our commitment to the values for which they gave their lives. To forget would be a disservice. To remember is a form of gratitude that our nation must never let fade.

Let us use this day not just as a break from routine, but as a chance to teach our children, support our local veterans and remember that behind every name on a memorial plaque is a story of courage. By honoring those stories, we strengthen the very fabric of our community.

True observance of Memorial Day goes beyond ceremonies and moments of silence. It calls on us to live in a way that honors their legacy—by supporting veterans and military families, upholding democratic ideals and engaging actively in civic life.

This Memorial Day, may we gather not just in celebration, but in remembrance—with hearts full of respect and gratitude for those who gave all.
