Dear Editor,

Tuesday’s editorial, “Shelter on the Shelf,” unfairly portrays EHC LifeBuilders and the situation with the Sobrato Transitional Center in its implications that we have not been up front with the community, and that work on the project is not moving forward.

Yes, the project is experiencing an unforeseen setback. But it is important for Dispatch readers to note that the Sobrato Transitional Center is the last of three phases of this project “approved in concept two mayors and one president ago.”

Since then, EHC LifeBuilders and our partners have followed through on our promise to build 13 for-sale single-family homes and 60 apartments of transitional and permanent, affordable housing for Gilroyans in need. And until now, we’ve been fortunate enough not to suffer any significant delays.

When we learned that this final phase had hit a bump, we did not hesitate in letting the community know. We also pledged to give the community a project update in three months.

We will keep our promises to Gilroy, as we have throughout the two decades that EHC LifeBuilders has been helping Gilroy’s homeless. We ask for your patience while we decide how to best move forward in order to provide homeless people with the right kind of help. Like most bumps in the road, this has slowed us down but has not stopped us.

President and CEO EHC LifeBuilders
