Gilroy – The Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters is looking for dedicated, enthusiastic volunteers to work at the polls in the June 6 Gubernatorial Primary Election. Volunteers are particularly needed to work in the south part of the county, including Gilroy and Morgan Hill.
Morgan Hill resident Pi Silverstein has been an election officer for 26 years and volunteers because it is work that needs to be done, he said.
“I like to pay back the community I enjoy as a citizen,” he said.
Volunteering is a great way for voters to serve their communities and get involved in the democratic process. Election officers will earn a stipend of $85 or more for volunteering.
About 3,300 volunteers will be needed to staff 805 polling precincts across the county on election day. Election officers are responsible for setting up the polling place, processing voters and providing assistance as requested. In addition to serving a full day at the polls (usually 6am to 9:30pm), they also must attend a three-hour training class.
A lot is expected of election officers, but for most the experience is worth it.
“I like being able to inform people in my community about their rights and raise public awareness,” Silverstein said.
Anyone who is registered to vote in the state of California can become an election officer.
