Firefighters from the station at 7070 Chestnut St. responded to a structure fire at 2:30 a.m. near the 7500 block of Alexander Street, according to Gilroy Fire Department Capt. Joshua Valverde.
Valverde said the fire was the result of an electrical malfunction after a resident’s ceiling light shorted and fell. The tenant handled the situation himself and didn’t report any problems until smoke began to smolder at the location of the fallen ceiling light later on, Valverde said.
“Initially we went out and expected to arrive on a extinguished fire, but we arrived to smoke coming out of the scene,” he said.
Valverde said no one was hurt, and that fire crews had to tear the ceiling down to get to the flaming plywood.
