Fat Raises for Top-Level Employees and the Sidewalk Shaft for Us

Dear Editor,

Let me see if I understand this correctly. The city requires us to have sidewalks in front of our homes. In our parking strips we are required to let the city plant a tree.

The trees that the city plants are pulling up the sidewalks. So, now the city wants to transfer the liability from the city to the property owner. At the most the city will only pay 50 percent of the cost to replace the broken sidewalks caused by the city’s trees. They should bear the complete cost.

Please, people of Gilroy do not let the city manager, the City Council and the mayor tell you that they do not have the money, because they are acting like Santa Claus giving all of our funds away. It seems like all the new hires at City Hall can expect receive a larger salary than the last person. We can draw from our surplus to pay for the recent big fat raises.

So people of Gilroy we can revolt and cut down all of our trees that are damaging our sidewalks or move into PUD housing that are not required to have parking strips. All their trees are planted in their lawns.

What Could We Have Done Here at Home Instead of in Iraq?

Dear Editor,

Why do we have to go to Iraq to fight Al Qaeda when we have most of them here under the name of “neglect” – neglect of our bridges, Katrina refuges, children’s health etc.

How many bridges, etc. could we have taken care of for the amount spent on the other side of the world? How many of our young people would still be with us?

Read the Constitution Before Advocating the Denial of Rights

Dear Editor,

One of the most sacred documents ever published in this country is called the Constitution of the United States of America.

After reading Mr. Serrano’s Aug. 3 letter on Islam and the possibility of a mosque being built in San Martin, it’s clear he should read it.
