An undefeated run through the Mission Trail Athletic League doesn’t come easily, and Christopher’s girls field hockey team was rewarded for the feat when coaches recently voted on postseason honors.

Christopher senior midfielder Maddie Peterson was named league Most Valuable Player, leading a cast of seven Cougars who received all-league honors. The award had special significance to Christopher coach Lia Peterson, Maddie’s mother.

“Maddie just loves field hockey, and it shows when she’s on the field,” Lia Peterson said. “Her stick work is incredible, and she’s just really strong. In a way words can’t express, I’m very proud of her.”

Christopher (12-1-4) went 12-0-2 in the MTAL, eventually losing 3-0 to Leigh in the first round of the Central Coast Section playoffs.

The Cougars also had Emma Morley, Kyle Robinson and Emily Hilkene receive first-team all-league honors, and teammates Sherelle Butler and Lili Nguyen were second-team honorees.

Christopher’s Kristen Mank received the MTAL Sportsmanship Award.

“I hope they remember it forever. I think it was an exceptional feat,” Lia Peterson said of going unbeaten in league play. “It was fun to watch and amazing. The whole team put themselves in position to win, and the combined team spirit pushed them to where they are.”
