The Gilroy High field hockey team improved to 3-0 in the early going of the season, stopping visiting St. Ignatius 7-0 on Monday afternoon.
“We were a little off today,” GHS coach Adam Gemar said. “But we got better as the game went on, which is always good.”
Sophomore Lilybeth Mendoza, playing in her second varsity game, recorded a hat-trick, while Tayler Silacci, Katrina Carter, Esmeralda Gobea and Monica Marrazzo each chipped in one goal.
Four of the seven Mustang tallies were off of short-corner tries, a statistic that pleased Gemar.
“Corners are looking good for us,” he said.
Gilroy played without both of its goalies, who are both out with injury. Senior Alex Kachakji, a staple in the Mustangs defensive third, filled in and made three saves.
The Mustangs play again Thursday against Monta Vista on the road.
