SAN JOSE – Two second half Katelyn Nebesnick goals erased a 1-0 halftime deficit and propelled the Gilroy High field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Archbishop Mitty in Mount Hamilton League action Thursday in San Jose.
The second of Nebesnick’s goals came in the final two minutes of the contest, morphing out of the defensive zone from Shayna Robledo to Monica Marrazzo who found Nebesnick for the winner.
“What an awesome game,” head coach Adam Gemar said, noting that the contest was enacted on natural grass, which is an adjustment for the Mustangs.
“The game plan didn’t change, the girls just executed well,” Gemar added.
Mitty took a 1-0 lead in the first half, converting on its lone short-corner attempt of the game. The Monarchs managed just two shots on goal against an active Mustangs defense.
“The defense won it for us,” Gemar said emphatically. “Emma Leach was great. She’s a freshman going up against seniors.
“The defense is money right now. Hopefully they pay off on Tuesday.”
The Mustangs are now 6-0 in the Mount Hamilton and await a visit from rival Los Gatos, who also carries an undefeated record, Tuesday at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex.
