Firefighters were able to extinguish a small grass fire near the northbound U.S. Highway 101 on-ramp along 10th Street Monday afternoon.
A fire engine from the Gilroy Fire Department’s Las Animas Station doused the blaze, which burned a 10-foot-by-15-foot area of green grass, battalion chief Phil King said.
King said the cause of the fire is not known, but likely was caused by “hot debris,” perhaps a cigarette.
Dispatchers received a report of a fire at 1:09 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
