A final chance at a victory awaits the Gavilan Rams (0-9) Saturday at 7 p.m. in Aptos as the Cabrillo Seahawks host the football finale for both teams in Carl Connelly Stadium.
First-year Gavilan coach Spencer Gilford acknowledged this week that the Seahawks are a difficult opponent to face on the their home turf.
“Cabrillo’s been winning close games at home,” said Gilford. “We’re going to their house and we’ll see what happens.”
Coach Bill Garrison’s Seahawks are 3-6 for the season, including a 2-2 Coast Conference mark. Cabrillo scored 33 points last week in a victory over West Valley. Gavilan has produced a total of 55 points through nine games.
The Seahawks have won the past four meetings with the Rams, most recently the 42-31 win that concluded John Lango’s 11-year tenure as Gavilan head coach in 2010. The Rams edged Cabrillo 20-19 at the end of the 2006 season to earn a share of the conference title.
“Cabrillo is similar to us in that we’ve both had some injuries,” added Gilford. “We’ll give it our all.”
Cabrillo lost starting quarterback Jerry Alvarez to injury recently, forcing Garrison to use both Roberto Concha-Foley and Brent Moyer under center.
“We’re concerned with how we execute our offense more than how Gavilan plays us,” said Garrison. “We’ve been happy with the way we’ve run the ball lately.
“Gavilan’s shown great resolve, great character with all the obstacles they’ve faced. They do play hard, they’re sound offensively and defensively.”Â
