Mustang JV hoops wins Watsonville Tournament
WATSONVILLE – The future of boys basketball at Gilroy High keeps getting brighter by the day.

Over the weekend, the junior varsity hoopsters notched their second tournament title of the season, winning four straight games for their first-ever Watsonville Tourney Championship. The local ballers, under the direction of Coaches Jay Baksa and Craig Martin, were coming off a title run in the Bob Hagen Tournament in Gilroy.

Ryan Chisolm was named tournament’s most valuable player, netting a team-high 13 points as well as five rebounds in Gilroy’s 44-40 championship victory over Monterey. Andrew Alcones, who tallied 10 points in the finale, and teammate Dominic Jackson, who recorded seven points and a team-high four blocked shots, were both named to the All-Tournament team.

The title run began with a 61-49 victory over Scotts Valley with Jeremy Teschera putting in a team-high 10 points and Dominik Wilkins adding nine points. The Mustang JV-ers then thumped Alisal by a 43-30 margin with Adam Supnet netting 10 points and Jackson tallying 10 points, six rebounds, and three blocked shots. Chisolm added six points and a whopping 12 rebounds.

The garlic hoopsters kept up the intensity in their third game, torching Salinas, 51-33, to reach the championship game. Chisolm caught fire with a team-high 18 points and nine boards, while Jackson put in eight points for Gilroy.
