The following organizations and individuals deserve either CHEERS or JEERS this week:

JEERS: For the city of Gilroy which should be looking out for its “little brother,” the school district, when it approves developments, especially large-scale projects like the Glen Loma Ranch. The school district has no leverage in the process. city pressure district has no leverage in the process. Absent city pressure, what the community gets is a development that doesn’t even come close to mitigating the cost of necessary school facilities. In Glen Loma Ranch’s case, the city’s wish list, which really should be called a demand list, includes a fire station, two parks and a trail system – more than $8 million – and no proviso for schools. Where does that capital “G” for greedy really belong? On the city’s back.

CHEERS: For Judge William Elfying who threw out attorney Bruce Tichinin’s lawsuit against the city of Morgan Hill which stemmed from the spying/alleged affair/development debacle. Let’s hope Tichinin accepts the ruling by Judge “Elf” and decides not to don his Grinch costume for the appeal process. It’s time to move on.

JEERS: For parents who sanction teen drinking at their homes. Gilroy’s City Council should strongly consider a pro-active step, the adoption of a social host ordinance. The new law would provide for prosecution and penalties for adults who sanction teen drinking. Perhaps a social services organization like Community Solutions could become the advocate for such a law.

CHEERS: For the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department which made an arrest in the odd school bomb case that has Rucker School on edge. The device has been downgraded from a bomb to an explosive more akin to a large firecracker, but anyone making such a potentially harmful explosive and tossing it onto school grounds should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

CHEERS: For the City Council’s move to take up the issue of illegal signs, including the banning of human billboards. Hallelujah! The unadulterated garbage that constantly bombards Gilroy residents at every corner is more than a mere nuisance. Human billboards are a traffic hazard, and the illegal signs make our city look like a garbage heap.
