The results are in for Gilroy Garlic Festival’s annual Art Poster Contest and once again a local artist has come out on top. Sheryl Cathers of Gilroy bested the other 28 competitors to take home the cash prize of $750.
“I was very excited,” laughed Cathers, as she described the moment she heard the news of her winning entry.
Cathers’ winning poster depicts a plump bulb of garlic, with a couple cloves falling away, against a multicolor background made up of the word “garlic” written hundreds of times.
“I wanted something colorful, loose and light,” said Cathers.
Mollie Botill, chair of the retail committee that picked the winner, said that Cathers’ poster was chosen because of “the beautifully shaped garlic and the creative background.”
This is Cathers’ second time entering the nationwide contest, her first attempt in 2003 garnered her third place.
Visitors can get a print of the winning poster at the Festival’s Mercantile stores for $10, and for a real personal touch the artist will be on hand to sign them.
