Gilroy – They kept the game close in the first 18 minutes, but the Gavilan men’s basketball team eventually succumbed to a deeper, quicker Fresno squad 106-60 Wednesday in the Chabot Tourney at Chabot College in Hayward.
Assistant coach Mike Baumgarpner said the Rams (8-6) could not match No. 1-ranked Fresno’s depth. The Southern California team substituted 15 players.
To start the second half, Fresno went on a 10-0 run and never looked back. The final score reflected it.
Though the highlights were few, Baumgarpner singled out Broc Sondgroth for praise. He sank some difficult shots at the start of the game, while Rams Adrian Zamora and Andre Hayes also played hard on both ends of the court, according to the coach.
Despite being blown out, Baumgarpner still saw the game in a positive light.
“It was a good experience for us,” he said.
“It was good to know that we could compete with a team like this and keep the game close.”
In Tuesday night’s tournament opener the Rams beat Foothill for the second time this season.
Leading the way in the 71-67 win was Sondgroth, who scored 17 points.
Gavilan was set to play Spokane (Washington) Thursday, the final day of the tournament, in the third place game at 3pm.
