Gilroy – In a weekend trip to Los Angeles, the Gavilan baseball team went 2-1 in three games against Los Angeles Mission College, just missing the opportunity to boost its record above .500.
The Rams (8-9) won Friday’s contest 12-1 and the first of Saturday’s twinbill 9-0, but lost the last game 6-5 in late innings.
Hot at the plate for the Rams’ was outfielder B.J. Collom, who went 5-for-6 in Friday’s win. He homered and drove in five runs.
“I think we had 13 hits in that game,” said Gavilan head coach Neal Andrade. “We handled them pretty good. It was good to pick up some games we missed early on from rain. Some guys that normally don’t get to play a lot got in and that was a good thing too.”
Pitchers Todd Gimenez and Eric Groner earned the weekend wins.
In the loss, the Rams led 5-2 going into the seventh inning. But L.A. Mission struck back at the plate to take the lead and eventually the win.
“I think we were fatigued from the drive, maybe that played a part in the game,” said Andrade. “It was a long day.”
Gavilan plays three games this week, including a make-up game against San Jose City College Wednesday, a game which should have been played yesterday but was cancelled because of wet conditions.
The Rams play Coast Conference South rival Monterey Peninsula College at home today at 2pm.
