GILROY—Gavilan breezed past Chabot to notch its first conference win of the season Friday at home.
The Rams swept the Gladitors in straight sets 25-11, 25-19, 25-11 behind solid offensive performances from Samantha Nydam and Madison Hartman. Nydam led Gavilan in kills with 13 while Hartman added 10.
Erica Chapa served up a stellar four aces in addition to her team-high 34 assists. She also had 12 digs in the game.
Alexia Balisterei led the defense with three solo blocks and tallied nine kills for the Rams. Haleigh Hawkins chipped in with eight kills of her own. Valerie Rodgers led the Rams with 15 digs.Â
Gavilan (6-7 overall, 1-0 in conference) will be back on the court at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Ohlone Collge in Fremont.

Chabot edges Gavilan
Gavilan fell just shy of earning its first ‘W’ of the season, losing 2-1 to Chabot on the road Friday.
Oscar Zuniga scored the lone goal for the Rams on an assist from Enrique Rodriguez in the first half.
Angel Vasquez was stellar between the pipes for the Rams, notching 11 saves in the game.
Gavilan (0-5 overall, 0-2 in conference) looks to right the ship when it plays at Evergreen College at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in San Jose.Â

West Hills bests Gavilan
The Rams’ struggles continued against West Hills Friday as Gavilan lost 61-13 on the road.
West Hills struck four times in the first half to build a 28-0 lead before the Rams got on the board. Luke Morrin hit Ryan Reynolds for a 28-yard touchdown with 44 seconds left in the first quarter, but the point after try was blocked.
The Falcons went on to score six consecutive times before the Rams could reach the endzone again. Morrin connected with Anthony Brooks for a 27-yard score early in the fourth quarter, which capped off scoring for both teams.
Morrin split quarterback duties with Sterling Montgomery and each threw two interceptions a piece. Morrin finished 6 for 15 for 77 yards and two TDs. Montgomery went 8 for 21 for 47 yards. Brooks led the team on the ground with 22 yards on 12 carries. He also led Gavilan in receptions, grabbing two for 57 yards and a touchdown, but the Rams could only muster up 159 yards of total offense to West Hills’ 392.
Christian Rodriguez led the defense with 13 total tackles. He had a sack that cost the Falcons 10 yards, forced a fumble and had four tackles for a loss of 23 yards.
The Rams (0-5 overall, 0-2 in conference) have their bye this week and will be back in action at 5 p.m. Oct. 17 to face Cabrillo at Christopher High School.
