The Gavilan volleyball team got off to a strong start at the Delta College Classic Friday, but struggled the remainder of the tournament.
The Rams opened with a 25-17, 25-16, 25-9 win over Shasta Friday, before losing 3-0 to Fresno, Foothill and Modesto Colleges Friday and Saturday.
Samantha Nydam had another strong game for Gavilan against Shasta, picking up 10 kills, followed by Ryan Asp with six. Lissette Pedraza added 15 assists, while Daisy Valladares had eight digs and four aces. 
Nydam racked up 42 kills in the tournament. 
The Rams had a hard fought battle with Fresno, needing extra points to decide Set 3, only to lose 22-25, 23-25, 29-31. Nydam had 12 kills while Asp had nine. Pedraza had 17 assists and Valladares accounted for 18 digs.
It was a similar story against Foothill, but Gavilan fell 18-25, 21-25, 21-25 in its first game on Saturday. Nydam had 14 kills in this contest, while Cheyanne Dela Merced picked up 20 assists. Valladares had 22 digs against Foothill. 
The Rams struggled most against Modesto, losing 12-25, 19-25 and 20-25. Asp and Nydam each had six kills in the game.
Gavilan (3-5) will be back in action at the Napa Valley Tournament Tuesday. 
MEN’S SOCCER
West Hills blanks Gavilan
West Hills scored seven goals in the first half to shutout Gavilan 7-0 Friday at home. 
The visitors scored in the 9th, 12th, 13th, 18th, 24th, 28th and 35th minutes for the final.
Hibsen Tamayo had three shots on goal, but was unable to get one past either of West Hill’s goalies—Francisco Mora and Ismael Farfan—who combined for four saves in the game. 
Gavilan’s Angel Trejo faced 18 shots, allowed seven goals and made 11 stops in the contest. 
The Rams (0-2-1) will look to rebound with a 4 p.m. game Tuesday at San Joaquin Delta College.
