San Bruno – Openers are always tough to figure.
Add a new coach and mostly new players playing on the road, and it could make for some challenging times.
Gavilan College overcame those potential obstacles and opened the Tito Addison era in grand style Tuesday, using balanced scoring to turn back host Skyline College, 71-65.
“I didn’t know what to expect the first game,” Addison said. “Out of our first 16 games, 15 are on the road. You start with a win, you have to be happy with that.”
Four freshmen were in double figures for the Rams, who led 36-28 at halftime. Kenny Hills led the way with 20 points. Eric Van Vliet had 12 points and seven rebounds, Daniel Wynn had a strong all-around game with 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists, and Jessie LoBue added 11 points.
“We got up pretty big and they climbed back in it,” Addison said. “We had a couple of minor mistakes, but we executed pretty well. I was happy to get out of it with a win. For the first game, it wasn’t bad.”
Gavilan is in action Thursday through Saturday at the Las Positas College Tournament in Livermore.
