The following organizations and individuals deserve either CHEERS or JEERS this week:
CHEERS: For all the generous Gilroyans who donated to the needy this Thanksgiving. More than 400 showed up at the Lord’s Table in Gilroy for the traditional meal. That’s double the usual number. There were certainly enough pies to go around, too. Jenny’s Kitchen readers donated 181 pies – an amazing number. And the crew cooked up enough food to fill the stomachs of those in need of a free meal.
JEERS: For the students who are being picked up in truancy and the parents who are, apparently, tolerating this behavior. Gilroy Police are doing a real service to this community by sweeping three times a month for truants, but let’s recognize the value of a good education and get those numbers down.
CHEERS: For Robert Mendez, the Gilroy High student featured in our Thanksgiving edition. Mendez, who was born without arms and legs, has a remarkably joyful attitude and an independent spirit that uplifts his many friends. In the wonderful story, Mendez said: “First, I’m thankful for life, because the No. 1 gift is life. And I’m also thankful for everything I can do. … And I’m thankful for all the people here who have helped me along the way. I don’t think I’d be the same without them.” If you missed the story in Wednesday’s edition, we humbly suggest you go back and read it.
JEERS: For the Valley Transportation Agency which continues to pursue the BART-to-San-Jose extension despite huge projected costs and no source of funding. Get ready voters: The VTA is planning a 2006 permanent half-cent sales tax for Santa Clara County residents that will fund light rail and BART. Have you seen the packed light rail cars lately? The VTA is clearly the worst-run government agency in the region and should be dismantled and reconfigured.
CHEERS: For the beautiful pre-winter views of grape fields, farms and hills that surround our lovely community.
