Caller rips signs
I’m glad GavFest was a big hit (see the Wednesday, April 25 Dispatch), however it would be nice if the organizers would re-tresspass upon private properties (and telephone poles) and remove their signs. Thanks.
Red Phone:
Dear Caller: Red Phone called Gavilan College and got the scoop on the GavFest signs. Volunteers put the signs up all over town, and they will be working to take every last one of them down. Their goal is to remove them all by Friday. But, if you can’t wait that long, rip one of those buggers down yourself. Go ahead, it’ll feel good.
15 minutes of blame
Parking is at a premium downtown (thanks to the wisdom of our city leaders and their “Vision”) except for Heritage Bank. Two additional private 15-minute parking spots (to go along with the three they already have on Lewis Street) were added. How are they able to trump the longtime downtown businesses (who suffered financially through the street closure) and receive VIP parking for their customers? Why can’t Heritage Bank customers park by the railroad tracks or on Eigleberry Street, as (Mayor) Al Pinhero and (Community Development Director) Wendie Rooney keep insisting is a “Safe” thing to do. Certainly the other vendors are entitled to their own private storefront parking. Fifteen minutes to pull up, grab a cup of coffee, pick up a lunch order to go, fill up a water cooler or perhaps just buy a music CD. Tasks easily accomplished in 15 minutes. I can’t wait to read the justification (excuse) for the preferential treatment. All the merchants deserve private storefront parking, not just the new kid on the block. All or none, it’s only fair.
Red Phone:
Go ahead, park in those spots and grab your coffee. Get your sandwich to go. Do whatever you need to do, but be quick. It’s easy to confuse these spots as ‘banking only spots’ because they’re outside the bank, but the only rule that goes with these is that they are ’15 minutes only’ spots. This parking was requested by Heritage bank downtown and granted by the city council, but they aren’t just for bankers according to Don Dey, the city’s traffic engineer. Don Dey, Gilroy traffic engineer, says the only real rule for them is that they’re ’15 minutes only.’ There are five spots with the 15-minute rule. So caller, you can thank the new kid for getting them for everybody instead of slamming them for being selfish.
