After all, this is break week and the spring sports season is just beginning. Nevertheless, first-year coach John Langer wasn’t upset at all after the Mustangs dropped their Tri-County Athletic League opener 6-1 to Palma.

For one thing, No. 1 singles player Ben Wilson won his match. Also, No. 2 singles player Matt Chan was up a set when he had to default because of an ankle injury. And, three players who figure to see plenty of action were missing for a variety of reasons.

“Actually, I’m pretty impressed by what we have,” Langer said. “We have three or four guys who picked up a racket for the first time this year. I think we’ll be strong in doubles and should be fine.”

Wilson, at No. 1 singles for the third straight year, defeated Nick Fracioni 7-6 (7-2), 7-5. Chan beat Chris Monlongat in the first set 6-3 and was trailing 3-2 in the second when he had to default because of the injury.

In other singles matches, Palma’s Austin Duke defeated Michael Tajan 6-0, 6-0, and Daniel Cunnane beat Sai Erdenechimeg 6-2, 6-0.

The Chieftains swept the doubles as Raul Alfaro and Patrick Evans defeated Sangmin Park and Esteban Delgadillo 6-3, 6-1; Cory Banks and John Gibbons defeated Zach Singh and Vinh Vong 6-1, 6-1; and Steven Rogalsky and Stephen Alexander defeated Corey Gardner and Ryan Azad 6-2, 6-1.

Langer expects to have Takashi Miwa available for singles, and Edwin Fernandez and Mitchell Souza for doubles by next week. On Tuesday, the 10 Mustang players who were available all played.

“We had a lot of rainouts last year,” Wilson said. “We lost matches (that were not made up). We won once. I think we’ll be better this year when we get all our guys.”
