CARMEL – Head coach Sean LaGuardia said before the Tri County Athletic League water polo tournament that his GHS girls varsity team wanted to win three games this week which would give them the league championship. After two games, they are two-thirds of the way there.
A 13-8 win against Notre Dame on Tuesday, set up a match against rival San Benito on Thursday where the Mustangs eeked out a 9-8 victory to send themselves to Saturday’s final in Carmel.
The Mustangs led throughout the game and held an 8-3 lead heading into the fourth period. However, it came down to a Devan Lauber save with 10 seconds remaining for the Mustangs to leave with the win.
“They played their best game of the season for those first three periods,” LaGuardia said. “We were able to hang on in the end.”
Junior Chelsea Hill led the way with five goals. Lauren Rhodes chipped in three scores and sophomore Michelle Shields had a goal of her own to go along with two assists. Lauber blocked 15 shots in net for the Mustangs.
“It was an emotional roller coaster,” LaGuardia said. “We came into the game really loose. At no point did I think we were pushing.”
