Gilroy High’s softball team dismantled a Tri-County Athletic League member from Salinas for the second time this week, 10-run ruling Alvarez with an 11-1 victory that was called in the bottom of the sixth when Jamsine Perez and Brittany Balanesi both scored on a wild pitch to Sara Lira.
This came after a single by Kylie Herrada (3-for-4) that scored Caitlyn Pierotti in the fifth inning, four runs in the fourth (including a two-run home run by Lira), two runs in the second, one of which was scored by Diana Carter (2-for-2), and two runs in the first – one by Herrada who scored on a triple by Perez (1-for-1, 2 BB) and a sacrifice-fly by Balanesi (1-for-3) which scored Perez.
“I think our past couple practices have paid off,” Gilroy coach Catherine Hallada said. “Once they get ahead early they go off of each other. One girl hits and the rest of them hit.”
The victory, combined with a 17-1 win at Alisal on Tuesday, makes for an excellent week for the Mustangs (17-5 overall, 5-2 TCAL).
“It puts us in a good position playing Notre dame next week,” Hallada said of the team’s next game on Tuesday.
Notre Dame is currently in second place in the TCAL, a game ahead of Gilroy.
The Mustangs came into Thursday’s game with momentum on their side. Ashley Harrington pitched five innings with 11 Strikeouts, while also hitting a home run for the Mustangs. Alyssa Castro was 2-for-3, Caitlyn Pierroti was 3-for-4 with a double and Ashley Serrano was 3-for-4 with a triple.
Home runs were also hit by Carter (1-for-4) and Michaela Motch, who was 2-for-4 with a triple and grand slam.
