Danny Contreras and Gilroy were running wild during the first two games of the Monta Vista/Cupertino Host Lions’ Easter Tourney.
The Mustangs stole seven bases Monday in a 9-5 win over Lynbrook and six in an 8-3 win Saturday over Saratoga. Contreras had three stolen bases in each game.
But it wasn’t just aggressive baserunning that Gilroy used to boost its overall record to 11-8. James Lafuente and Chris Salter sparkled on the mound as Gilroy extended its win streak to four.
Lafuente allowed one run in five innings against Lynbrook as the Mustangs built an 8-1 lead. Michael Stevens led a 14-hit attack by going 3 for 4 with a double. Jacob Dexter had two hits and two RBIs, and Contreras scored three runs.
“We were a little slow in the beginning,” GHS coach Clint Wheeler said. “After we shook off a Monday with no practice, we did a pretty good job. Lafuente has worked hard in the bullpen with the pitching coach and it showed. He was in control the whole way.”
Sophomore catcher Brandon Elam, up from the junior varsity for the week, had two doubles and “brought a lot of energy to us,” Wheeler said.
Salter pitched four innings of three-hit shutout ball with three strikeouts and no walks in relief. Matt Hemeon doubled and drove in two runs for the Mustangs, who banged out 12 hits. Kevin Grove and Stevens were each 2 for 4 with a double and RBI, Charlie Duffy and Tyler Osborne had two hits each, and Dexter and Contreras scored two runs each.
“We did a good job,” Wheeler said. “We were solid, steady the whole time. I was very pleased with what (Salter) gave us.”
Gilroy will start Grove when it returns to action at 7pm Wednesday at Pacifica.
Frosh/Soph Track and field
The Gilroy girls finished fourth, one-half point out of third and only 4.5 out of first, in the Frosh/Soph Classic Track and Field meet Friday at Los Gatos High School.
Mustang girls placed in 12 events and boys placed in six events.
Kim Johnson was the only Gilroy individual to place first with a toss of 97-04 in the discus. Johnson was fourth in the shot put with a heave of 29-04.
Other girls who placed included Elise Ogle, whose fourth-place effort of 5:21.56 in the 1,600 was just over a second more than Shanna Skillman’s school-record 5:20 posted in 1987.
Also, Ariana Vera was third in the 200 in 26.73 and fifth in the 100 in 13.04; Sarah Unadia was sixth in the 300 hurdles in 50.99 and eighth in the high jump in 4-8; Paty Hernandez was sixth in the 3,200 in 12:11.91 and eighth in the 1,600 in 5:28.91; Brandie Rodriguez was sixth in the 3,200 in 12:16.58, and the 4 x 400 team of Lexi McPhail, Ogle, Erica Sanchez and Vera was sixth in 4:24.80.
Among the boys, Dante Fullard posted sixths in the high jump in 5-6 and triple jump in 40-00.5, Tyler Hill was third in the 65 hurdles in 9.98 and seventh in the 300 hurdles in 44.62; Jaime Reyes was seventh in the 800 in 2:04.85; and Richie Sotelo was eighth in the high jump in 5-6.
Volleyball Tournament
Gilroy’s young, inexperienced volleyball team went through growing pains Saturday at the Leland Charger Classic.
The Mustangs dropped two-game matches to Bullard, Los Gatos and Sacred Heart Cathedral before coming back to defeat Prospect 22-25, 25-20, 15-9. Gilroy tried to keep the momentum going in its next match against Pioneer, winning the first game 25-21. But Pioneer came back to win the next two games 25-17, 15-6.
“Looking at it, Bullard in our pool beat Monterey in the Gold (Division finals),” GHS coach Sue Grogan said. “Los Gatos took home the Silver trophy. And Sacred Heart lost to Mountain View in the Gold and Mountain View went very far in CCS last year. So as far as competition, we had one of the toughest pools.”
The Mustangs return to Tri-County Athletic League competition at 6:30pm today when they host Salinas.
