Gilroy High baseball cruised to a 13-5 victory over the Alvarez Eagles in Salinas Tuesday.

Sophomore pitchers Max Fishler and Michael Hartman combined to get the win and close out the game in relief, respectively. Fishler pitched four innings, walked four batters, struck out three and only allowed one earned run. Hartman finished the game on the mound, striking out three batters in as many innings while only allowing one earned run. Three runs were scored by the Eagles in the third inning from errors.

The Mustangs were propelled by a dominating performance at the plate, scoring two runs in the first and five in the second before adding runs the rest of the way. Charlie Duffy, Kevin Grove and Roberto Celestino all recorded three RBI on the day to help Gilroy – now 11-14 overall, 9-5 in the Tri-County Athletic League – win its fourth straight game. Alvarez dropped to 5-18-2 overall, 1-11 TCAL.

“We came out right out of the shoot,” Gilroy coach Clint Wheeler said. “We had one rough inning defensively, but other than that we were all right.”

Gilroy will host Salinas Thursday at 4 p.m. before an eight-day break that ends with a game at Palma on May 2. At this point of the season, Wheeler thinks rest will be good for his club even though the team is surging as the season winds down. Only four regular season games remain and Wheeler has admitted that the team will need to win at least one or two more games to have a realistic chance of qualifying for the Central Coast Section playoffs.

“I’m not worried about (the break),” Wheeler said. “Its’ a good thing this late in the year … The kids are a little tired. We could use the break and then come back ready to work.”

Taylor Chris is expected to get the start for Gilroy on Thursday but Wheeler noted that with time off ahead, all of his rotation and bullpen will be available if needed.
