Gilroy – Balanced scoring was the key to success during the last two games for the junior varsity boys basketball team.
Gilroy started things off confident after beating rival San Benito last Friday night, 53-43. Kendrick Azcueta led the way with 13 points and was assisted by Justin Wheat with 12 points, and Stephen Galtman and Jamie Jensen, who each had 10 points.
The boys followed with another win on Wednesday night against North Salinas. Jensen’s 15 points led the way. Wheat had 14 points and 15 rebounds, Azcueta had 12 points and nine assists, and Galtman had 10 points and 12 rebounds as the Mustangs cruised to the victory, 63-43. This win gave the boys a 19-6 overall record.
The freshman boys suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Haybalers on Friday night, dropping a 46-43 decision despite 10 points from Max Fishler and eight points and eight rebounds from Chris Louvis.
On Wednesday night, they pulled together to stomp the Vikings in a 56-39 win. The team was led by Neal Dinsmore’s 10 points and Nico Sandoval’s eight points and four rebounds. With the win under their belts, the freshmen improved their overall record to 16-8.
Both the junior varsity and freshman girls fell to North Salinas on Tuesday. The JV girls battled the Vikings into overtime as Breana Mah hit a critical trey late in regulation. With three seconds left in overtime, the Vikings’ Melbourie Muyco’s trey beat the Mustangs, 38-35.
The boys’ soccer team finished the season off strong, beating North Salinas on 4-0 last Friday and getting another win over Salinas, 5-1 on Monday night. The last game of the season was on Wednesday at home, where the boys tied 1-1 against Alisal.
The girls’ soccer team also held on strong when battling North Salinas. The game ended in a scoreless tie.
The JV wrestling team lost 65-15 to San Benito on Wednesday night, after forfeiting nine weight classes and giving the Haybalers an automatic 54-point lead. Of the five wrestlers that are on the team, three (Adam Rosso, Jesse Hernandez and Luis Barragan) won their matches.
