Mustangs defeat Gunn 1-0
Palo Alto – Gilroy High coaches Brian Hall and Armando Padilla talked with the team at halftime about taking advantage of a short field with long throw-ins.

And three minutes into the second half that’s just how the Mustangs scored as they opened their season with a 1-0 win over Gunn in the Titans’ first night game.

Sophomore Bruce Ocana took a long throw-in from Noel Vera and beat the goalie from between eight and 10 yards out.

“Noel made a long throw-in, about 40 yards, that the defender missed,” Ocana said. “It was pretty exciting getting our first goal. We played well. We’re a young team but we’re going to be a very good team.”

It was a defensive struggle between GHS and one of the Coast Conference Section perennial playoff teams.

The Mustangs had a 4-1 edge in shots on goal led by strong play from the midfielders.

“We matched their intensity level and passed it,” Hall said. “Our fitness level and energy were great. Everyone played a part and put in a special effort.”

The win was achieved without two of the GHS offensive stars, Humberto Pineda and Jose “Tapon” Velasquez, who were away because of club commitments.

“We had most of the possessions,” Hall said. “Our defensive backs (Vera and Eric Miller) shut down their forwards, denying them their passes.”

JV: The Gunn junior varsity outscored GHS 5-2.
