Dust off your garden shears.
The Gilroy Demonstration Garden will have a demonstration Saturday on how to prepare healthy compost for your garden.
Meet 10 a.m. at the Gilroy Arts Alliance Interim Center for the Arts at 7th and Monterey streets for a slide show and then walk to the garden located at Eigleberry Street between Sixth and Seventh streets.
Bring garden shears and nonelectric hand-hedge trimmers, if possible.
Wreath-making is also scheduled at about 12:30 p.m. after the class.
The garden grew from a project of Leadership Gilroy, a nine-month program that grooms community members for leadership roles, and celebrated its official opening day June 5.
The concept of the garden is simple, according to garden director Judy Hess. Community members who volunteer their time are allowed to select some of the fruits of their labor to take home to their families, free of charge. Community members that can’t find the time to volunteer may purchase produce from the garden. Ten percent of what’s grown is donated to St. Joseph’s Family Center and another large chunk is sold to Lizarran Tapas Restaurant just a block away. The garden also fuels a variety of educational programs for school groups and summer camps on composting, seasonal growing and nutrition.
