Grade
Gilroy got a C for tobacco control from the American Lung Association, which releases a yearly report studying the availability of cigarettes and exposure to secondhand smoke. Overall, the city falls below San Jose’s B ranking, but above Cupertino’s D and Los Altos’ F.
GIlroy was best in reducing sales in tobacco products, requiring sellers to have a local license. It got an A for making sure youth can’t buy with a false ID and controlling electronic cigarettes. Gilroy doesn’t have a smoke-free housing policy for multi-use complexes, which brought the grade down. It also has some smoke-free outdoor air policies governing some restaurant patios, but not all of them, and not all of the city parks.
It doesn’t have a smoke-free outdoor event policy or one for ATMs and bus stops, the agency said. Only the unincorporated areas of Santa Clara County got an A.
