As expected, the school board unanimously approved a high school boundary that will split Gilroy along Hecker Pass Highway, First Street and IOOF Avenue.

Starting next school year, students residing north of the line will head to Christopher High School, which opened in August 2009, at the corner of Day Road and Santa Teresa Boulevard in north Gilroy. Students to the south will attend Gilroy High School on 10th Street.

Trustees said they were pleased to create a clear, geographical boundary. From the start, they knew they would have to revisit the current boundary, a convoluted line that cuts a jagged path from east to west across Gilroy. That line was created in 2009 when CHS only had freshman and sophomores. Next year, the high school will open its doors to all four grade levels.

The new boundary will mean that CHS will house about 330 more students than GHS by 2014. The boundary will also send a higher percentage of low-income students to GHS, about 56 percent compared to 48 percent at CHS.
