Gilroy came up with a strong effort over the weekend at the Monterey Bay Shoot Out in girls’ water polo, going 2-1-1.

In their first game, the Mustangs outlasted Tri-County Athletic League rival Carmel 9-6, led by Jenny Ailes’ six goals.

“We kept putting pressure on their goalie with great chances in front of the cage,” coach Andy Been said. “Our girls just wouldn’t be denied.”

The next game was heartbreaking 10-9 defeat to TCAL rival. Ailes had four goals, Kelly Been had three and Lauren Baty added two.

Next up was a battle with undefeated Mercy. Gilroy didn’t get the win, but swam to an 8-8 tie with Mercy. Ailes had six goals and Maegan Collett had two.

“The tie was a glorious result for us,” said Been. “We battled this undefeated team into three overtimes, and we had substituted in every player on the bench, to give them experience.”

Gilroy finished fifth in the tournament by beating Sobrato 14-4. Ailes again poured in six goals. Lauren Van Herk tallied three more and Alex Mara had two.

The Mustangs return to action at 3:30pm Wednesday when they host Carmel.
