second-alarm house fire on the 1700 block of Mantelli Drive in
Gilroy Monday afternoon.

The Santa Clara County Fire Department was dispatched to the blaze at 1:32 p.m. where an attic fire was burning through the second floor and through the roof, according to Battalion Chief Richard Salazar. Four engines and two battalion chiefs responded.
Firefighters went into the home to rescue the occupants’ two cats. Salazar said the cats were scared, but fine.
The fire was deemed a second alarm as a precautionary measure – bringing out two more engines and a fire truck – and was contained by 2:17 p.m.
A separate fire was burning in the home’s downstairs fireplace, but Salazar said the cause of the attic fire is still under investigation and it’s unknown if the two are related. Damage is estimated at about $70,000.
