GILROY—An 83-year-old Gilroy woman has died of injuries she sustained in an Oct. 5 stabbing, according to the Gilroy Police Department. Her grandson, Stephen Gause-Subia, already in custody and charged with the stabbing of his grandmother and 60-year-old aunt, now faces a charge of murder.
Gause-Subia, 20, was booked on an amended charge of murder in connection with the death of his grandmother, identified as Margarita Subia, police said Monday. Gause-Subia is in Santa Clara County Jail after being arrested and booked Oct. 5 on suspicion of attempted murder in the stabbing Subia and his aunt, who police have not identified.
The 60-year-old victim is recovering from her injuries after receiving emergency surgery following the incident, GPD Sgt. Royce Heath said.
“Investigators are still trying to determine the motive behind Stephen’s attack on his family members,” Heath said, adding that the investigation is ongoing.
Police received a 911 call from the 8400 block of Wayland Lane at 6:10 p.m. on Oct. 5, about a disturbance that included the screams of a woman, according to the GPD. The caller told authorities someone in the home was bleeding and that there had been a beating. Officers arrived on scene and found two women there with numerous stab wounds to the face, head and limbs, Heath said.
Both victims were rushed via helicopter to a San Jose hospital, where they received emergency surgery, police said.
Police officers searched the surrounding area and quickly identified Gause-Subia as a suspect. He allegedly fled the scene before police arrived but was found walking along Murray Avenue, where he was taken into custody without incident at 8:19 p.m., according to Heath.
