Longtime Hollister resident Jim Horn passed away at Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital on July 1st at the age of 77. Jim was a member of Sacred Heart Parish; a member of and a former Officer of the Hollister Lodge No. 1436, B.P.O.E; a member of the SIRS; the Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 234 of Castroville; a veteran of the Korean War, and had been a long time member of the former Hollister Dance Club. Jim and his spouse Shirley celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary last October 16th. He and Shirley liked to travel aboard cruise ships to different parts of the world with the Friends Forever Tours, as well as spending time in the out-of-doors fishing with his buddies.
Angie Silveira passed away at St. Louise Regional Hospital July 1st at the age of 86 years. A native of San Jose, CA, Angie graduated from James Lick High School, attended Nursing School, and moved to San Juan Bautista in 1959 with her late husband Manuel Silveira. Angie worked as a nurse for over 30 years. Angie will be remembered riding with her late husband Manuel as a "matched pair" in various parades up and down the state of California; locally in Santa Clara, San Benito, & Merced Counties; at Los Banos, King City, and Chowchilla. They were very active in the Future Farmers Of America, also with the World's Fastest Draw Association---participating in Shoots and Shows at the San Benito County Fair and all through the state of California. They were both members of the N.R.A. and San Jose Horseman's Assn. In addition to being a homemaker, she and her husband raised crops and livestock on the family ranch in San Juan Bautista. Surviving Angie are her children and their spouses Pete Silveira, wife Diane of Hollister, Manuel Silveira, wife Lynn of Washington, Jim Silveira, wife Pat of San Jose, Henry Silveira of Morgan Hill, Betty Weldon, husband Abe of Elk Grove, Delfina Sheets, husband Randy of San Juan Bautista; 32 grand children, 40 great-grand children, and 4 great-great -grand children, several nieces, nephews and relatives living in the San Jose area.
Lois passed away peacefully on June 28, 2008 at the age of 84 surrounded by her family. She is survived by her husband Knapp (Tom) and her three daughters Linda Frisbey of Aptos, Peggy Foster of Phoenix, Arizona and Sandy Jones of Hollister and her son-in-laws. She has 6 grandchildren and 10 great-children that she dearly loved. She is also survived by 2 sisters and an extended family in Georgia and South Carolina.
Henry "Hank" Vowinkel passed away June 24, 2008 in Los Gatos. A Visitation will begin at 1:00 P.M. followed by Funeral services starting at 3:00 P.M. on Friday, July 11th, 2008 at Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.
Carmela Scarcella, born in Brooklyn, NY to Anthony and Mary Villante, passed away on Monday, June 30, 2008. A resident of Gilroy for 35 years. She was 94 years old. Carmela came to California in 1955 with her husband Nunzio, who was a Sergeant First Class in the Army stationed at Ft. Ord. She held the position of Chief Telephone Operator at Ft. Ord for 18 years until her retirement in 1973. During that time , she received several awards and citations for her exceptional organizational and management skills.
Jim Virgin was born in San Jose, CA and grew up in Los Altos. He lived most of his life in Santa Clara County, attending local schools. Most recently he was employed by Electric Power & Research Co. (EPRI) in Palo Alto.
