The administrators of Gilroy Prep School, a brand new charter school set to open August 2011, have posted an opening for four teachers on Craigslist.

The decision to post on Craigslist versus EDJOIN.org, a public education job search website frequently utilized by Gilroy Unified School District, was a cost-saving measure since Craigslist is free, noted James Dent, principal of Eliot Elementary School who will spearhead GPS in the fall.

“We’ve had so much interest already,” he said. “We’re open to anyone who is interested in working at GPS and providing a type of teaching and work environment that’s different than public schools.”

During its first year GPS will cater to students in the kindergarten through second grades, then expand by one grade every year until it reaches the eighth grade.

“GPS believes there is no excuse for student failure. We are seeking highly dedicated individuals who are committed to continuing to develop professionally as a teacher and a leader. We are seeking team players who are willing to engage in frequent dialogue and be relentlessly self-reflective with regards to teaching practice,” wrote Dent in the job posting.

So many teachers are looking for work right now, he added.

“There’s not a lot of positions out there.”

He said last year when Eliot had a kindergarten position open, more than 200 teachers applied.
