Gilroy experienced 4 percent growth in the first quarter of 2010, compared to the same quarter last year.

The growth is “slightly better than expected,” according to city officials. The city collected $2.3 million in sales tax in the first quarter of 2010, compared to $2.2 million during the first quarter of 2009.

Though most cities in Santa Clara County reported higher growth, city officials said they believe Gilroy is back on track from a sales tax standpoint.

Stores at the Gilroy Premium Outlets largely contributed to the growth, which may be an indication of an influx of more out-of-town customers or an uptick in purchases, according to the city. However, the car dealerships showed weak sales and actually contributed 1.9 percent less than this time last year. The downtown also retreated by 15.8 percent after a strong holiday season.
