Unlike the first time the teams met or Gilroy’s most recent game before Wednesday, the Mustangs didn’t let an opponent off the hook.
Gilroy had watched a big lead evaporate last month when it beat Salinas, and the trend repeated itself last Friday when the Mustangs edged Alvarez.
This time, Gilroy raced to a big lead and maintained a double-digit advantage throughout in an 80-66 win over Salinas that locked up second place in the Tri-County Athletic League.
About the only similarity between this game and the contest last Friday against Alvarez was that Spencer Ford had another standout performance. The 6-11 senior center scored 17 points, had 18 rebounds and three blocked shots for the Mustangs (18-7 overall, 8-3 TCAL).
“The kids played well offensively,” GHS assistant coach Jeremy Dirks said. “We shot the ball well and passed the ball well on the offensive end. Defensively, we would have liked to have had a few more stops. But when you’re running at that pace, sometimes you don’t get back.”
Javin Charlot and Ford combined for 15 points in the first quarter for fast-starting Gilroy, which jumped ahead 12-0 and never looked back. The Mustangs grabbed a 50-34 lead at halftime and led by as many as 30 points in the third quarter before settling for a 70-46 lead at the end of the period.
Charlot had a game-high 19 points, handed out 10 assists and had three steals. Kameron Handy had 17 points. Jason Conrad scored 14 points, had 15 rebounds and six blocked shots. Derrick Toney had 12 points to lead three Cowboys (14-13, 4-7) in double figures. R.J. Pua had 11 points and Nick Bradley.
“Offensively, we looked like the team we thought we would be all year,” Dirks said. “We got good production from our big guys, which is a key.”
Gilroy finishes its TCAL season Friday when it hosts Alisal.
