Gilroy Veterinary Hospital won the Spice of Life Small Business

For nearly 25 years, the Gilroy Veterinary Hospital has followed one simple rule: Do what’s right for the animals and their owners.

“We don’t try to sell things,” said Dr. Greg Martinez, a veterinarian and co-owner of the hospital.

The veterinary hospital has dedicated itself to helping Gilroy residents – both four- and two-legged. This year, Dr. Martinez, along with business partner Dr. Dennis Harrigan, earned the Spice of Life Small Business Award from the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce.

“I feel honored, with the economy the way it is, just to be working,” Martinez said. “Also I’m honored that the people put their trust in us to give us the award.”

The small veterinary hospital has a big impact, caring for as many as 1,000 animals per month. For a staff of fewer than 15 people, it makes for busy days. Both Martinez and Harrigan make the time to participate in the community in many other ways.

Both Martinez and Harrigan are members of the Gilroy Sunrise Rotary. Harrigan is also the vice president on the Garlic Festival’s board of directors and has been a chef on the festival’s cook-off stage. Martinez helped develop the elementary school science program at Gilroy Gardens. He’s also written a book, “Dr. Greg’s Dog Dish Diet for Pets,” detailing healthy canine eating habits.

“Dr. Martinez and Dr. Harrigan are amazing. They really are a role model for youth and for each of us in the community,” said Susan Valenta, President and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce. “As a local business, they have given back many times over through their generosity of time, donations to fundraisers, and always being a part of the solution.”

The Gilroy Vet Hospital is located at 9565 Monterey Highway, and is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Call 408-842-9348 for more information.
