Go mustangs!

Taylor Slattery lifted the Mustangs to the one-goal lead early
in the first half, but the slim advantage slipped away late in the
second half.
For as long as the Gilroy High girls soccer team held a 1-0 advantage over Monta Vista – it disappeared just like that.

Taylor Slattery lifted the Mustangs to the one-goal lead early in the first half, but the slim separation disappeared with 30 seconds left in the second half when the visitors struck for the equalizer to send the contest to a 1-1 draw at GHS on Wednesday night.

“We relaxed a little too soon,” GHS head coach Jose Hernandez said. “When you risk it, something like this can happen and we are smart enough to realize that. The girls will learn from it.”

Alex Maldonado assisted on Slattery’s tally, which came within the first 10 minutes, Hernandez said.

And despite the hiccup at the end, Hernandez felt steady progress was made in the girls’ performance.

“We fixed a couple of the things we wanted to on offense and we did a very good job possessing the ball,” he said. “The offense is starting to take shape.”

The Mustangs (1-1-1) return to their home turf for a non-league tilt with Presentation at 4 p.m. on Friday.
